Aha! Well, go to your flooring retailer and buy some of the product they use for sealing cork floors. Then give your finished mat several coats of it, and reapply in the future every once in a while to keep the water and dirt from being absorbed into the cork. What creative people you two are! :)

I would recommend NOT seal the wine cork mat. Please see this post: http://www.craftynest.com/2010/03/sealing-wine-corks-test/ That should answer your question. As for hair or dirt, use a vacuum attachment to vacuum it off every once in a while.

That tub was in my old apartment, built in 1958. I'm sure it's original, because the owner took great pains to keep everything original.

How do you make the Matt stay together

1. Pop the cork. To kick off the list, let’s start with a material that reminds us more of happy hour than of bathroom design: cork. Not only does cork add a rustic feel to a room, but also it provides a cushion for your feet. Cork is a sustainable material, a fact that designers and homeowners find appealing. You can even make your own mat out of bottle corks (like the one pictured here).

Julia Pockett added this to Discover the Unstoppable Advantages of Cork for the HomeMay 17, 2013

Cons of cork. Although cork is water resistant, it's not waterproof, so take care to seal your cork properly. It might need to be resealed every few years or so. Without proper protection, cork can stain. Sharp objects can also cause significant damage to cork floors. Approximately 6.6 million acres of Mediterranean cork forest covers Southern Europe and Northern Africa, which is where most of the world's cork supply originates. Some argue that the negative effects of shipping to North America from so far away outweighs the environmental advantages. However, Nora Berrahmouni, Mediterranean forest unit director at the World Wildlife Federation has encouraged consumers to buy cork flooring. Since there's a decline in the global market for cork wine stoppers (many have been replaced with less ecofriendly screw-top and plastic stoppers), other cork products will help support this sustainable form of agroforestry.
