Golden Rat Tail Cactus

Would it be okay to break off some of the larger side pups on my Golden Rat Tail cactus to start a new one? I don’t want to damage the mother plant. Would I put a rooting hormone on the broken end or should I just let the stem dry out for a few days? Thanks! Janice
