I know this is an old thread - but I was wondering if I can use the stump grindings of a spruce tree that I had removed recently. I can't link into that article from Organic Gardening any more - that might have answered my question....!!

I live in the Chicago area. We have problems with snails and grubs in the moist soils. Which would be better for my garden inorganic or organic mulch. We rarely need to water so the pests love out flowers.

Soil is the most important part of a garden...poor soil health = poor plant life. So, I always recommend organic mulch which can decompose and "feed" the soil. Never put weed fabric between the mulch and the soil for this reason. Of course there are conditions where I would not recommend it: in high fire ares, high wind areas, etc.
