I had an ugly hearth space for a wood stove that had been removed (must have been special). That's black slate rock or something. Too hard to remove, so I had it walled in and resurfaced with stone stacked rock veneer. We built the mantel from maple plywood and painted beluga black. The space now holds a zero vent gas fireplace with thermostat and remote. So cozy in Alaska.
