i know this is an old post but I hope you're still out there Mr. Dresser. I am moving into the home I have attached a picture of. We plan to keep the color of the trim in this house. Do you think the color combination of the floor would work with it or be "too much" brown? The pictures are of entry which opens to both the living and dining room with the family room behind, if that helps.

Hi Monica. You could always have your hardwood guy make up a couple sample boards of different stains and review them before moving forward with refinishing the floors. But I think the stain combination in my project here would work fine with the existing trim and doors of your house. Good luck!

I think whenever you have a large room (like 24' x 26'), it really helps to have something to break up the ceiling so it doesn't look like a hotel ballroom. Coffers are a good looking, economical option. Antique timbers are also nice if they blend with the architectural style.
I think the coffered ceiling is more classical than the "1980's trey" and will continue to be popular.

What I am referring to are the grilles which are attached to the inside of the windows and secured by small pins. I have seem them broken when people attempt to open a double hung window by pushing on the grilles. I have also seen them warp. Perhaps there is a higher end version of these applied grilles, but I have not seen one. And I have never seen grilles which can be applied to the exterior, but they could be out there somewhere. If you want the look of divided light windows, SDL is the best way to go in my opinion.

It is not uncommon to raise the ceiling height from 8' to 10' as part of a large renovation of the entire house. It would typically be cost prohibitive to attempt to do it for just one room. As far as estimating a cost, it would really be impossible for me not knowing the specifics of your house and the local construction market.
Your best bet is to find a local architect and/or builder and have them come out to the house to assess the feasibility. Hope this helps.

Diluted is referring to the intensity, i.e. the pigments added to colour the base. When you dilute a paint colour by 50% it means you are adding half the amount of pigments that are associated with that colour. So if a colour requires 4 drops of red and 2 drops of black, then a 50% version of it would have 2 drops of red and 1 of black.

It really depends upon the height of the doors and windows in the room. If they are at 6'8" or 7'0", then I think it would work fine. If they are 8', I think the coffered ceiling would look crammed down upon the casing above the doors/windows. I believe these beams are something like 10" deep, but you could make them as shallow as 4" - 6" and that would help also.

The coffered ceiling creates 9 boxes. Recessed can lights are centered in the 7 boxes around the perimeter. In the box over the fireplace, there is a 4" directional art can to illuminate the art work. I can't recall what is in the center box, but we typically leave a wire in the ceiling in case someone wants to had a hanging fixture there later.

The room is probably 20' x 24' or so. That would make the inside dimensions approximately 5.5' x 6.5'. We didn't design the coffers to a certain size though....we just divided the room out into equal sections.
If you are going to do a ceiling like this, it is helpful to run strings on the ceiling at framing (before drywall) representing the beams so as to help visualize the space and insure the recessed cans get put in the right place.

I would do hardwood floors in the kitchen as they are easier on the feet, easier to keep clean, and less expensive than tile. But if you really want to do tile, I would look to some of the ceramic products that look very close to marble or stone. Maybe something that looks like white carerra marble.

I really have never used fiberglass doors. While yes, they are more durable than wood, my clients tend to like the look and feel (and imperfections) of a real wood door. If they are properly installed and not left unpainted very long, you should be able to prevent any warping. The size and wood species is also a big variable. An 8' door is more likely to warp than a 6'8" door. Pine is more volatile than Mahogany. Also, doors with a three-point locking mechanism, which secure the top, middle, and bottom are a good way of keeping the doors from warping.
Good luck!

I would love to know the dimensions of this room. Especially the width of the far wall. And since I can't see where the room ends, just knowing the length from far wall to second door wall. Thanks!

I believe the fireplace wall was 22' and the exterior wall (with the French doors) was 26'.

They are from Lincoln Windows and Doors. They are 5'4" wide and 8'0" tall.

It was done by a local Atlanta artist. Give her a call.

Grilles on outside of glass or in between? - Hello, I love the doors and we are about to order but I am struggling with whether to put the grilles on the inside or outside of the glass. Placing the grilles on the outside is preferable.....but the problem is cleaning. Does it look that much worse to place the grilles in between the glass. Thank you so kindly for your opinion.
