    I saw this picture, and your question, as part of my own research into recessed lights to light up a dark little alcove. I found Juno, 2" recessed LED lights, that will do the job. Am just still perusing photos to make sure I have the right things; you should take a look at them. They come in 3 beam spreads (spot, narrow flood, and wide flood) -- the wide flood spread will work the best.

      Desk becomes nook as focal point coming down stairs or into great room. Furniture piece as counter + storage. Add display shelving left/right.
