While OSMO top coat is not USDA registered food grade, it is German food grade - just didn't spent the $$$ to get US certified. Great stuff and really the only product I want to finish with anymore. Used OSMO on this Walnut kitchen island.

Apply one thick coat of the wax that gets hand buffed in to the countertop. Reapply when the wood starts looking thirsty. We do it every month or so.

There is about 36" between the fridge and the island and 42" between the perimeter cabinets and the island. On the far side of the island is about 30" of clearance. More important than the room size are these clearances. These are all tight but they work. Your room size sounds sufficient for an island but it's all in the details.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Becky Harris added this to Kitchen Solution: The Open Island
This island had some drawers for extra storage and still keeps a more open feeling. I like the contrast of the blue paint with the rich reclaimed wood.
Becky Harris added this to 20 of the Coziest Kitchens Around
Handmade cement tiles set the tone for this cozy kitchen. Open shelves over the refrigerator contain collections of cookbooks, and birdhouses add a personal touch.
Cathy Lara added this to Nontoxic Paint 101
Natural paints and finishes. Natural paints and finishes have little to no odor and are made from natural raw ingredients: water, plant dyes, essential oils, plant oils and resins, milk casein, natural latex, beeswax. Read the label and you'll see ingredients that you can more or less pronounce.People with allergies and sensitivities to traditional paint should consider using natural paints and finishes, as they are known to be the safest. The butcher block counter above was sealed with a wax and mineral oil mixture from The Real Milk Paint Company; its natural ingredients make up for the fact that the sealer wax has to be reapplied a few times a year (although that could be a burden to those on a budget). General contractor John Whipple says, "Many of my builds cater to a more senior clientele, who are more affected by the strong odors of paints, adhesives and lacquer clear coats. Reducing smells goes a long way to making my clients happy if they are living in the property through the renovation." Whipple and his team use Honeywell HEPA filters and circulate fresh air in their smaller homes. Brands: Anna Sova, Green Planet Paints, Masters Blend, The Real Milk Company
Vanessa Brunner added this to How to Plan a Kitchen Workflow That Works
Ogawa suggests staying between two and three exits — more than that makes things complicated and cuts into counter space and storage. “Two ways in and out of the kitchen keeps a nice flow, especially during parties,” agrees Alper. “But it’s all about looking at the big picture. Design your kitchen to include the furniture layout in the adjacent rooms.”
Dylan Chappell Architects added this to Think Like an Architect: How to Work With a Design Wish List
After space and budget considerations, think about your lifestyle. Having children and pets may inspire certain choices, such as a mudroom, while erasing other choices, such as a glass sculpture in the foyer. Think about where you live, too. A mudroom really isn’t necessary if you’re a city dweller in a 22nd-floor condo. Compromise is a given in the process of creating a new home. But stick to your guns when something doesn’t ring true to your heart.
