Attractive living as an architectural experiment: a 136-year-old water tower, a listed building with a spectacular 360-degree panorama view over the City of London. The task, to transform it into a superior residence, initially seemed an absolute impossibility. But when the owners came across architect Mike Collier, they had found a partner who was to make the impossible possible. The tower, which had been empty for decades, underwent radical renovation work and was extended by a four-storey cube containing kitchen, dining and living room - connected by glazed tunnels and a lift shaft. The kitchen, realised by Enclosure Interiors in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, with furniture from LEICHT is the very heart of living in this new building.
Shiny white matt-lacquered kitchen fronts (AVANCE-LR), tone-on-tone with the worktops, reflect the light in the room and thus create expanse and openness. The surface of the handle-less kitchen fronts has a horizontal relief embossing; depending on the light incidence, this results in a vitally structured surface. The free-standing preparation isle with its vertical side panels with a seamlessly integrated sink represents the transition between kitchen and living room. The fronts of the floor units facing the dining table were extended to the floor to do away with the plinth typical of most kitchens. Ceiling-high tall units on the wall provide plenty of storage space; the electrical appliances are integrated here invisible to the eye. Floor units on a high plinth which thus appear to be floating form the actual cooking centre within the kitchen, attached to the wall. A range of handle-less wall units concludes the glazed niche at the top.

A penthouse suite overlooking Victoria’s outer harbour, this one-of-a kind interior explored innovative solutions to make the most of its 360-degree views. In 2009, the suite won two Gold CHBA CARE awards (best innovative feature and best kitchen) and three Silver CHBA CARE awards. It was also nominated for two CHBA Georgie Awards in 2009.

Residential Architecture: rear facing ground floor extension with internal alterations
Overview
Single storey, alternative extension with open plan living space
The Brief
Transform an existing end of terrace property for a growing family using alternative materials and aesthetic. Use a single storey design with lots of glass and interesting features. Open up the ground floor, retain the existing living room to the front and the period entrance hall while creating a new, large, flexible family zone off the garden
Our Solution
We looked to use a single storey, flat roof design with a set of openable, sliding doors and a bay window to sit in and enjoy the garden in the winter months. We developed a series of spaces around the family zone for family life – For sitting and drinking a coffee, for doing homework, for chatting and relaxing. We also designed in a boot room and bike storage area as well as space for kit for the kids sports. We have since adjusted the rest of the property to allow the family to stay in the house and area for the foreseeable.

The proposal for the renovation of a small apartment on the third floor of a 1990s block in the hearth of Fitzrovia sets out to wipe out the original layout and update its configuration to suit the requirements of the new owner. The challenge was to incorporate an ambitious brief within the limited space of 48 sqm.
A narrow entrance corridor is sandwiched between integrated storage and a pod that houses Utility functions on one side and the Kitchen on the side opposite and leads to a large open space Living Area that can be separated by means of full height pivoting doors. This is the starting point of an imaginary interior circulation route that guides one to the terrace via the sleeping quarter and which is distributed with singularities that enrich the quality of the journey through the small apartment. Alternating the qualities of each space further augments the degree of variation within such a limited space.
The materials have been selected to complement each other and to create a homogenous living environment where grey concrete tiles are juxtaposed to spray lacquered vertical surfaces and the walnut kitchen counter adds and earthy touch and is contrasted with a painted splashback.
In addition, the services of the apartment have been upgraded and the space has been fully insulated to improve its thermal and sound performance.
