Horizon Interior Design
A two-story restaurant and bar in the heart of Rochester Hills approached Horizon Interior Design with an exciting design brief to pay homage to the American-style food they served with a 1940's retro redesign.
The new tenants had some great ideas for fresh paint, décor, a mural of a vintage plane, and a female pilot in a pinup style reminiscent of the 1940s. They wanted to keep their flooring and furnishings as is, challenging us to create a harmonious design while incorporating what they already had.
Using vintage magazines, newspapers, and posters from the 1940s, as well as replicas of old décor and wall art, we brought the 40's back to this commercial restaurant's interior design! Adding deep red and white accents to the navy blue walls created a patriotic feel, while a hand-painted distressed American flag hung over the bar for that extra touch of 40's magic.
We painted a magnificent wall mural of a jet and pilot, applied shiplap to the front of the bar and an accent wall, and then decorated it with vintage tin signs from the 1940's. We installed luxurious vintage-style chandeliers on both floors, illuminated with Edison bulbs to warm up the dining areas and bring a sense of grandeur to the space. Upon completion, walking into the restaurant felt like being transported back to this beautiful decade, attracting clientele to experience something special.

This Dining Room redecoration project is one of my favorites! My clients are very artistic with eclectic tastes and collections. They wanted me to recreate their formal Dining room into a fun, casual place to entertain. They were not afraid of color and willing to take some risks. The color scheme is a bold combination of orange and slate grey, with accents of yellow and white. The furniture is a combination of painted mirrored pieces with an old world walnut trestle table and over sized upholstered chairs. We added a settee in the bay window slip covered in grey velvet and tall wing chairs to bring in for extra seating. Now my clients enjoy this room regularly and have plenty of room to entertain.

We took one of the side tables out of the room. This gave her some extra space, and it took away a surface to pile papers on.

It’s been my experience that it’s not un-common to discover fantastic tiled floors hidden underneath an additional layer of flooring usually carpet or linoleum. This was the case with this property, situated in the town of Canley, Coventry, where the owner had found a Quarry tiled floor underneath Vinyl tiles which had been stuck down using an adhesive.
Quarry tiles are typically hard wearing and very durable and a sensible choice for flooring in high traffic areas of both residential and commercial properties, a tiled floor is of course a difficult to remove so it’s not surprising that tiles do get covered over rather than replaced during redecoration.
Taste’s change and like most property owners who unearth hidden tiled floors, my client was keen to restore them as an original feature. Despite the amount of adhesive and the poor state of the Quarry tiles, I was confident that the floor could be restored to new, so we agreed a date for me to come back to the property and complete the work.
The process of cleaning the Quarry tiled floor – including remove large amounts of adhesive – took a total of two days to complete.
I started by carefully removing the Vinyl tiles using a hand scraper which as you can imagine was a lot of manual effort and the adhesive proved quite difficult to remove. In the end I had to use a combination of a very coarse 50 grit pad fitted to a heavy rotary machine lubricated with water, to clear the area completely of the substance.
The resulting slurry was rinsed away, and the floor was then given a thorough acid rinse with Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up. Grout Clean-Up is a cleaner which contains concentrated phosphoric acid, and is designed to dissolve minerals such as salts and cement left on the surface of the tile.
This was followed by a final thorough rinse with water, and the excess moisture was soaked up with a wet-vac machine.
After the cleaning process was complete, I left the floor to dry off completely for 24 hours. Upon my return to the house the next day, I checked for any dampness that could have damaged the performance of the sealer, thankfully, the floor was dry and ready to seal, and so I proceeded to apply several coats of Tile Doctor Seal & Go Extra.
Seal & Go Extra is a fully breathable sealer that provides for effective moisture transmission. It provides durable surface protection against dirt and stains, and is suitable for most kinds of internal, natural stone tiled floors, including Quarry, Victorian and Flagstone.
As you can see from the photographs the Quarry tiles came out really well and it’s hard to believe that this is the same floor.

If you’re a first time buyer in the process of renovating or redecorating your new property, you may well discover some fantastic tiled floors hidden under your carpets. Certainly in my experience this happens quite often, so it came as no surprise when I got a call from a couple who had pulled up the carpet in the kitchen of their new house in Chester to find Quarry tiles, along with some fantastic Victorian tiles in the hallway.
While the Quarry tiles were in relatively good condition – having been shielded by carpet for many years – the couple were still understandably keen to get them back to looking their very best. I was more than happy to help them do just that.
Before beginning the restoration, I removed the kick boards from the kitchen cupboards so as not to damage them. I then applied a solution of our versatile, high alkaline cleaner, Tile Doctor Pro Clean, and let it soak into the tiles for a short period before scrubbing it in using a rotary machine fitted with a black scrubbing pad. Pro Clean is suitable for use on most natural stone tiles, including Quarry, Victorian and Slate, doing the trick to break down medium to heavy soil buildup.
The floor was then rinsed off with clean water, and the resulting slurry was promptly removed using a wet vac. I then left the floor dry out overnight.
I returned to the property the next morning, and started out by taking a couple of damp meter readings to make sure the floor was dry enough to seal. This is an essential task before sealing any tiled floor as even the smallest amount of excess moisture can cloud the sealer and damage its performance.
To seal the floor, I firstly applied one coat of Tile Doctor Colour Grow, which really brought out the natural reddish shades in the Quarry. As an impregnating sealer, Colour Colour fills the pores in the stone and prevents dirt from becoming ingrained. I followed the application of Colour Grow by applying three coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go Extra. As a topical sealer, Seal and Go Extra forms an additional stain resistant seal on the surface of the tiles to protect against dirt and stains. It also gave the tiles a quality sheen finish as requested by the customer.
The customers were very happy with their newly restored Quarry tiled floor. They left the following feedback:
“We were both thrilled to bits with how nice the Quarry tiled kitchen floor looked, after being cleaned and sealed. Alastair was a pleasure to deal with and we would highly recommend him to anyone considering having their floor done.”

This project was one which I particularly enjoyed realising. The master bedroom is probably one of my favourite rooms developed up to date. The lovely couple had no fear in using black velveteen damask wallpaper as a feature wall, and I admired them for this.
There are some exquisite finishes in the bedroom such as Carrara Marble, used as a top for the chest of drawers, the tall boy's and the bedside stands and finished off in a high-gloss white lacquer. The headboard is cushioned with white leather and the bed itself has a storage box underneath it powered by a hydraulic lift making it both appealing to the eye and practical.
A walk-in wardrobe was created by partitioning the room with a gypsum wall, a custom-made slide door was created for the entrance to the wardrobe with mirrors on both side ,particular storage unit was intelligently sectioned to keep all their clothes properly organised allowing maximum space utilisation. Apart from this bedroom, we were entrusted with the renovation of the kids’ bedrooms which were designed according to their age, and designed in a way that the furniture would be appropriate for the children as they grew older.
In the kitchen we added a Corian breakfast bench which gave a contemporary element to the classic kitchen which was present in the home and remained mostly unchanged. This addition allowed extra work space along with various interaction possibilities for this family. The living room and another recreational room were redecorated appropriately to keep the flow of ‘Classic Vs Contemporary’ running throughout the house.

The finished product of an 8year olds dream space, he lacked storage and room to enjoy whilst also using this room for years to come, we made him a bespoke bed, with storage, extra sleeping and desk with power to the underside, his window dressings were re made from old worn curtains -stunning transformation, a bank of wardrobes and storage was built along one wall and fitted with ceiling to floor doors covered in a football mural to give the effect of being in a stadium, the walls were stripped and redecorated and a brand new grass like carpet was laid.

Tribeca Grand Sofa from Crate & Barrel. Bought a white sofa (covered with a sheet in this photo) before I adopted the Newfoundland dog. I was only going to foster him...hahaha. He stayed and the new sofa got covered up. Sigh. What we do for love.
Sort of industrial style metal coffee table that I found on Overstock.com. Very useful when you have an extra large dog that wants to be near you when you're lounging around. I can put my feet on this one with no fear of damaging. No worry with spills either.

Led strips have been added underneath the kitchen units. The monochromatic geometric tiles add pattern to the kitchen, adding a touch of fun. The marble white worktops look perfect with the monochrome tiles, looking very refreshing. The brass sockets and the tap-ware look amazing with the joinery handles and add a glamorous touch. The hob has been fitted on the kitchen island, allowing extra space for our clients to work at, becoming very efficient.
