I am with @jdfortney on this one, vinyl is a horrible idea IMO, both for the effect on your family and indoor air quality while you own the floor, plus it will just add to the landfill once you decide to upgrade to hardwood. Hardwood will last for a very long time, can be refinished if you truly damage it (and I would think pets do a lot more damage than little ones) and you can cover it with rugs if you are truly concerned about the floor in a particular room to protect it.

The idea of carpet tiles is all good and fine but it is another petroleum by product. Personally I like natural materials like wool, cotton, sisal, particularly for kids who play on the floor all the time but if you don't have environmental concerns it is a practical idea.

I think removable cushions are better. Fort-building is fun when allowed, and it's probably easier to wash cushion covers when you can get the cushion off in the first place.

This article is fantastic. One more thing to add to the list though - cordless window shades. Most shades made nowadays have child-safety features on them, but the only 100% child-safe shade is one that has no external cords. If you have young children (or pets!) in your home, cordless shades are a smart idea.
