New This Week: 4 Fashionable Laundry Rooms
See how design and remodeling pros used paint, pattern and personality to freshen up these wash spaces
A well-designed laundry room is one you don’t mind spending time in. But how do you create a welcoming style that won’t fade like a pair of blue jeans? Here, four laundry rooms show how the right cabinet color, tile and storage details can give a space lasting good looks.
2. Green Getup
Designer: Selena Fitch of Fitch Design
Location: Seattle
Size: 110 square feet (10 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. A bright laundry room that doubles as a pantry.
Special features. Shaker-style cabinets in aloe-colored paint. Quartz countertops. Long hanging rod. Solar tube skylight. Utility sink. Luxury vinyl tile flooring.
Designer tip. “The client needed to put the kitty box in this room, so we designed a space under the wall-mounted utility sink for it,” designer Selena Fitch says. “To protect the cabinets and walls around the litter box, we extended the frames of the side cabinets a half-inch and added subway tile to the sides of them and the wall so they can be kept clean.”

3. Narrow and Nifty
Designer: Laura Medicus Interiors
Builder: West Elevations
Location: Morrison, Colorado
Size: 60½ square feet (5.6 square meters); 5½ by 11 feet
Homeowners’ request. “This is a narrow space and the homeowner wanted to be able to get a large dog crate in as well as folding and storage space and a sink,” designer Laura Medicus says.
Special features. “The patterned cement floor tile is a standout for the room and helps give this dark, narrow room some energy,” Medicus says. Other special features include soapstone countertops, handcrafted-look backsplash tile and light blue cabinets (Van Courtland Blue by Benjamin Moore).
Designer tip. “In a windowless or featureless laundry room or small kitchen, take your backsplash tile all the way to the ceiling for a big impact,” Medicus says. “You can use an inexpensive tile, but just go bold with it on the wall.
“Also, cement tile stains very easily, so when you purchase it, opt to have the manufacturer preseal your cement tile for you before they ship it, if they will. It’s a little more expensive but really worth it. We waited about 10 to 12 weeks to get this tile, so also remember that presealing adds time to the order.”

4. Fresh Function
Designer: Allison Hallman of Willow Interiors
Builder: Willow Homes
Location: Homewood, Alabama
Size: 40 square feet (3.7 square meters); 5 by 8 feet
Homeowners’ request. Maximize storage and function in a tight space.
Special features. Marble-look quartz countertop. Patterned porcelain floor tile. Open shelves between appliances. “The open shelving is good for detergent or a basket for lost socks,” designer Allison Hallman says. “We also used a pocket door to cut down on the doors swinging into the space.”
Designer tip. “When planning storage in a small space, really consider where each item you are storing will go,” Hallman says. “It helps eliminate clutter and you end up with a space you can really use.”

Designer: Courtney Sempliner Designs
Location: Long Island, New York
Size: 150 square feet (14 square meters)
Homeowners’ request. “The client wanted the laundry room to also serve as a mudroom, and therefore be stylish enough to see on a daily basis,” designer Courtney Sempliner says. “The design coincided with the gut renovation of the adjoining kitchen, so we continued the same style of cabinetry through the laundry room, although in a darker color.”
Special features. “We loved the stacking washer and dryer as a space saver,” Sempliner says. “We opted for the frosted glass on the paneled upper doors in order to disguise what was in the cabinets, and paired the gray cabinetry with a classic white subway tile.”
Designer tip. “We loved adding an upholstered bench to this laundry room, with additional storage below, to be an unexpected detail that you don’t find in many utility rooms,” Sempliner says.
“Uh-oh” moment. “The biggest challenge for us was to increase the functionality of the laundry room without losing the sophisticated design,” Sempliner says. “Stacking the washer and dryer was a game changer for us as it gave us a lot more counter space to work with.”
Sempliner collaborated with her client using Houzz ideabooks, and used Houzz Pro software to manage the project.
