Be very careful about over filling a drawer(s) as the unit can tip.

Yes the wheels work. They also lock so you can be safe when using sharp knives. Jr Woodworks supplied wheels.

Might work, but there are some questions that you should ask. What is the weight of all that you plan to put in the unit? Also, what are the specifications for the freezer? Does it produce heat and need ventilation? Also, it will need to remained plugged in all the time, so when you wheel it out, will you care about seeing the dangling cord?
  • kfpaige
I know that we would need wheels that will carry the weight when there is food in it. Will these kind work for a heavy load? The freezer is not huge...it is an average size deep freezer (right now it is located in one of our closets with other items)..and I don't mind seeing the cord when it is pulled out. Because we have a small kitchen, I'm just looking for extra prep space that we currently do not have....and I think this would work great if it can be done.

I like my 1949 under the counter butcher block cutting boards. I have four of them. When I bought the house they were warped. A carpenter reglued, patched and sanded them. I've been caring for them with Howard Wood Block Conditioner. Food Grade Mineral Oil & Natural Waxes (Home Depot). Actually I don't cut on them. I put a thin plastic cutting mat down on top. It feels different to chop on plastic on wood vs on top of a hard counter top. That I can easily wash. Otherwise the board attracts mice in the fall/winter. I use the boards a lot for extra space. They almost double my counter top usable space in times of need.

I should add. Please ignore the ugly fake butcher block formica counter tops. I dream of getting rid of them.

Did you protect the sides of the cavity to avoid chipping when the cabinet wasn't perfectly aligned when being moved under the counter? If so, how did you do that? I love this idea but am concerned about chipping

one could easily stow the dishwasher hose and cord behind the unit. one could limit the distance I can be pulled out from under the countertop and come up with a guide system to keep it moving straight in and out to prevent chips etc. as well.

There is no model number for this "island." It is a 100% custom design-build piece of cabinetry.

Unfortunately, the interior decorator was in charge of the paint colors. So, we don't have a record of the color.
