Our client constructed their new home on five wooded acres in Northern Virginia, and they requested our firm to help them design the ultimate backyard retreat complete with custom natural look pool as the main focal point. The pool was designed into an existing hillside, adding natural boulders and multiple waterfalls, raised spa. Next to the spa is a raised natural wood burning fire pit for those cool evenings or just a fun place for the kids to roast marshmallows.
The extensive Techo-bloc Inca paver pool deck, a large custom pool house complete with bar, kitchen/grill area, lounge area with 60" flat screen TV, full audio throughout the pool house & pool area with a full bath to complete the pool area.
For the back of the house, we included a custom composite waterproof deck with lounge area below, recessed lighting, ceiling fans & small outdoor grille area make this space a great place to hangout. For the man of the house, an avid golfer, a large Southwest synthetic putting green (2000 s.f.) with bunker and tee boxes keeps him on top of his game. A kids playhouse, connecting flagstone walks throughout, extensive non-deer appealing landscaping, outdoor lighting, and full irrigation fulfilled all of the client's design parameters.

Ulrich Designer: Tom Santarsiero
Photography by Peter Rymwid
This is a master bath with subtle sophistication and understated elegance. The cabinets were custom designed by Tom, with straight, simple lines, and custom built by Draper DBS of walnut, with a deep, rich brown finish. The richness of the dark cabinetry juxtaposed with the elegance of the white carrara marble on the countertop, wall and floors contributes to the room's sophistication. Ample storage is found in the large vanity and an armoire style cabinet, designed to mimic a free-standing furniture piece, that is positioned behind the door. Architectural beams placed across the vaulted ceiling bring a sense of scale to the room and invite natural light in through the skylight.

This living room was inspired by our clients love of Tuscany. Reclaimed DesignWorks provided the reclaimed beams and reclaimed wide plank antique oak flooring. The beams were all reclaimed from the same old warehouse in the southeast. The beams are finished with wax instead of stain and then buffed.
The antique oak floor is sealed and finished with a flat antique polyurethane.

We're in the shop here today showing you an alternating-tread staircase that's' going to a job-site in Napa tomorrow. I'm standing on the landing which is at exactly mid-floor level. It's going into one one these 100-year-old houses with a steep roof and lots of attic space. The homeowner called me last month saying he wants to access this large attic area with something better than a ladder. He didn't have room for a conventional stair but this alternating-tread space-saving stair was a perfect fit. It's all Red Oak which matches the hardwood floors throughout the house. Once these are installed at the site we'll put a handrail on top of the stringers on the open side.
I'll tell you a little about the alternating-tread staircases. It's built in a way that is nearly as easy to climb as a conventional stair. When we walk up a convectional stairway we normally use half of the stair tread at a time, placing one foot on the right half and the next foot on the left half. The idea of an alternating-tread stair is make half of each tread wide enough for your foot and then alternate the wide end of these paddle-shape treads from left to right. You still have your 10 inch minimum tread depth plus a 1 inch nosing projection. This give you 11" of support for each foot, just like a conventional stair. We normally make the risers a max of 7-3/4", but code allows us to go as high as 9 inches. This one is 7-3/4" which is very comfortable.
We installed a metal bar across the middle of each open-riser to limit the open space to less than a 4 inch gap.
Anyway, I just wanted to give you a quick shot of this. Tomorrow morning we get to go to the job-site and install this. I'd can't wait to see the look on the customer's face when we have this installed. I'll let him do the bragging :-)
Last but not least, I'd like to give glory to God and special recognition to a Jewish carpenter named Jesus. I don't know for sure if He built stairways as a carpenter, but I am happy to say that He is my LORD and I want to live my whole life for Him. God bless you!
And please contact me if you want any type of custom stairs.

![Tom Ralston Concrete](https://st.hzcdn.com/fimgs/8f63c08f02a870d0_0641-w32-h32-b0-p0--.jpg)
The Condit project is composed of three different concrete expanses across the beautiful property: a concrete pool deck and patio, a driveway front-entry, and dark-walnut acid-stained interior floors.
The exterior pool deck and driveway are flanked by exquisite stonework, done using Idaho quartzite. They also have precast concrete, as well as concrete that Tom Ralston poured with integral color. Banding was done in hard trowel texture and the panels were done with sand washed texture, exposing just a light amount of sand for a beautiful creamy finish.
The interior floors are acid stained with dark walnut, giving a rich, comfortable tone to the house. They were scored with an independent geometric grid pattern that had a unique design, giving an extra element of depth to the concrete. The stairs in the interiors are designed with arched, cantilevered, concrete steps with a particular square bull nose profile. The front stairs in the entry were designed with their own unique bull nose as well.
This project was as fun as it was large. It's always a good time to work on multiple decorative concrete projects across a property, creating aesthetic harmony throughout the home.

Rainforest Brown Granite is a stunning, dramatic granite with varying shades of brown and gray. It is quarried in Rajasthan, India. These homeowners wanted a stone that would add an exotic element to their cozy, suburban 60's home. Throughout their home they had Japanese decorations from time spent living there. You can see the influences of the Japanese design aesthetic in the clean simple lines of the kitchen and dark cabinets and shadows. They balanced out the exuberant Rainforest Brown Granite with streamlined cabinetry and appliances. We used angular lines and a quiet half-bullnose edge on the granite to tie the cabinets and granite together. The granite full backsplash is bookmatched, which means the pattern runs across the decks (horizontals) and up the wall. Because Rainforest Brown Granite varies a great deal from month to month and slab to slab, make sure to choose your exact slab before you fabricator cuts it.
