Visible from the kitchen and guest bed rooms, the third primary exterior space is a “morning patio” located on the east side of the house. Broad and finished in the ubiquitous concrete grid pattern, this private area repeats the motif seen throughout the exterior of large bowls placed on trapezoidal pedestals and planted with agaves. It’s another space in which the landscape rises above a series of low walls,but in this case, the sweep of those walls offers a curvilinear geometry that contrasts with the deck’s grid pattern. The star of this space is a curved and ascending rusted-steel wall in the form of a half spiral. Its presence discretely divides the space, lending the guest room patio a sense of privacy from the public breakfast patio. On the guest patio side, the steel wall encompasses a small waterfeature in which a delicate plume of water rises just a couple of inches above the water’s surface to provide a tranquil, trickling sound that conjures feelings of serenity in the calm, quiet space. The sweeping wall of corten steel also has a continuous six inch wide vertical cleft that allows an axial glimpse of the plume from the public side and, from the opposite angle, a sliver view through to the public space beyond. A cantilevered steel sluice spills from the cleft into a pebble filled reflecting bowl that overflows yet again into a final pebble filled basin set only one inch below deck level. At night, the plume, lower basin and impact zone of the sluiceway are all lit from beneath the water's surface, projecting a dancing light onto the graceful arch of the corten steel room divider. michaelwoodall.com

Completed in 2013, this stunning Italianate Mediterranean Villa is located in Highland Park, Texas and stands out in an already distinct architectural neighborhood. This project was designed and installed by Harold Leidner Landscape Architects. The expansive property features a lush landscaping, front motor court with travertine pavers and a luxury pool and spa. The pool area was designed to have a private resort feel to allow for entertaining. In addition to the spacious loggia and cabana spaces, the owner also wanted to have shade protection near the water, so a custom designed pavilion was built on the end of the pool to provide a shaded destination with cushion lounges that extend out into the water, flanked by fountains and adjacent to a fire bowl feature with a classic fire place surround. A truly elegant outdoor space for parties and entertaining with a sophisticated, modern flavor.

The client, who lives out of the Country most of the time, desired a regal haven for their quaint and quiet resort style living to enjoy the fresh ocean breeze and dramatic sunsets views. One of the desires of the client was to provide a balance between the Formality and Sensibility. Our design included a formal and dramatic raised infinity Pool, which is connected by way of a terraced water runnel, to an infinity Spa located just off the French doors of the master bedroom. The infinity Pool being raised allows for a wonderful connection of water bodies between the Ocean. and the Pool. Other amenities of the design includes a solid roof extension creating a quaint outdoor dining room to enjoy the stately nearby cook center. Additional elements to highlight this vacation retreat include multiple water features, warm limestone paving, refined pottery accents, with multiple patios and seating areas to enjoy for almost any function or purpose. All these fantastic features are wrapped together in a colorful palette of eclectic Mediterranean plantings, which elegantly provides that balance of classical function and lush aesthetics.

The infinity swimming pool is the centerpiece of this dramatic yard. The upper and lower travertine patios give depth to the entertaining space. The retaining walls double as a garden bed to bring color into the yard. The fire bowls on either side of the pool light add to the ambiance for evening entertaining.

This late 70's ranch style home was recently renovated with a clean, modern twist on the ranch style architecture of the existing residence. We were hired to create the entire outdoor environemnt including the new pool and spa. Similar to the renovated home, this aquatic environment was designed to take a traditional pool and gives it a clean, modern twist. The site proved to be perfect for a long, sweeping curved water feature that can be seen from all of the outdoor gathering spaces as well as many rooms inside the residence. This design draws people outside and allows them to explore all of the features of the pool and outdoor spaces. Features of this resort like outdoor environment include play pool with two lounge areas with LED lit bubblers, Pebble Tec Pebble Sheen Luminous series pool finish, Lightstreams glass tile, spa with six custom copper Bobe water spillway scuppers, water feature wall with three custom copper Bobe water scuppers, Fully automated with Pentair Equipment, LED lighting throughout the pool and spa, gathering space with automated fire pit, lounge deck area, synthetic turf between step pads and deck and a fully loaded Gourmet outdoor kitchen to meet all the entertaining needs. Our clients wanted to upgrade their backyard space at their home in a beach front community. They decided to install a pool with a spa and spillway surrounding the pool with luxurious travertine. The pool deck features columns that support gas fed fire bowls, a seat wall with a linear gas fed fire pit to accentuate the space. It was then decided to landscape using a tropical flair with palm trees and illuminate them and the rear of their home with low voltage LED lighting. To say that the homeowners are thrilled with their new outdoor pool space is an understatement.

Our client was building a new house on 2.5 acres in Northern Montgomery County, Maryland and contacted our company to design an overall master plan for the entire property. Their design requests included a custom naturalistic swimming pool with spa and significant boulder water feature. Extensive pool patio for entertaining 50-60 people comfortably, a custom storage area for pool accessories to be an extension of their new home. Elevated composite deck with curved rails, wide stairs, outdoor lighting, raised fire pit, new Techobloc paver entrance walkway. And to complete the master plan, a full landscape planting.
