Light filtering shade options for kitchen windows

We have a bay window in the kitchen which gets the hot afternoon sun. We have valances (which we may or may not keep) but no shades to keep out the blinding sun when we are sitting at our kitchen table. I was looking at a bamboo/woven type of shade but I'm not sure if they will still allow light in or not. Any suggestions?
