Laura so many paint the island a different color, but I'm thinking maybe paint the new covered area the same as the existing cabinets. It could possibly look a little odd having the cabinets of the island the white/cream and the sides and back a different color. Jus me though... Also, you have a beautiful kitchen!
I have te same granite in my bathroom and LOVE it!!!! I've considered repainting the vanity (an old buffet) to white but wasn't sure how it would look....seeing your cabinets with the granite has really helped me. I think I see some white/cream color paint in my bathroom in the very near future.

I love the way it came out. I was lucky to have found a good cabinet maker to do what I wanted done. Now the granite and brick don't compete against each other.

Good choice, looks great. All the stuff above the cabinets makes the ceiling look lower.

Ahhh but all that stuff above my cabinets makes ME happy and I like it. I think a lot of it is just the angle the photo was taken. Thank you for the kind compliment.
