Dark or light floor tile in the kitchen?

We are buying a semi-detached house. The kitchen has no windows, only a patio door in the dinette area. The kitchen cabinets are vanilla shaker style. Granite is cream with brown/purple spots. I like a dark tile for the floor because it's more practical - with three boys, I need practical. But I also want a bright, airy kitchen. I'm afraid a dark floor will make my kitchen too dark. Any advice?

Go for a medium color instead of having to choose between light or dark flooring.

I think you should go with a medium brownish tile with some dark flecks or veins going through it. Try to find a tile that has some of the brown colour that the granite has in it. I think if you were to go light then everything in your room is going to be light and boring. You need contrast.

Dark isn't more practical as it shows EVERYTHING! A medium color is much more practical as it hides a lot of the dirt. If you don't believe me, read through some of the threads on dark floors and see how many people complain that every little thing shows up on a dark floor. You would think it would be otherwise, but it isn't.
