When looking for a newer home to buy, we were told that most newer homes joists are not solid wood anymore..

and are made from laminated particle boards glued together to for a
10x2 inches . Is it true that joists are no longer made from solid 2x10 or 2x12???

    Solid 2x10 and 2x12 are still available. The other system is commonly referred to as I joists I meaning the profile looks like a capital I. I joists are lighter and I believe can bear more weight. Also the top of them are 2 inches wide as opposed to an inch and a half which makes nailing the plywood a little bit easier

    It depends upon the builder and the spans that are desired by the client. This house was built in the 1920s. Thanks.
