Not necessarily. We often use reclaimed wood for desk tops or a painted finish with glass protecting the desk. I've attached photos of a wood desk top and the rest of the kitchen with two other countertop finishes.

I agree. Mixing things up can add interest to a room. But I believe the kitchen cabinets and the desk base should at least coordinate.
