Should I use this plinth block in my trim?

Hi all. We are adding living space. 1940 San Francisco house. In the new master bedroom there will be these 2 windows with french door in the middle. GC put together a sample of the moulding and is using plinth block where casing and base connect. Thing is, on the rest of the house (upstairs), the original trim has no plinth blocks. Baseboard just die at casing. That's one reason I am not sure about the plinth blocks. Another reason is I wonder if it makes sense to have a block in this case when there is no header on top to counter balance. Relevant info, both the casing and baseboard are 11/16" thick.

What are your thoughts?

I feel I do need to explain the trim you see in the picture, and that's why I added more pictures. We had to be creative, so the trim is made of a cut of the casing (used on other doors and windows) and a filler. Just imagine, it all painted, caulked, as one piece.

I would really appreciate your input. Need to let GC know about trim today.

You could try bringing the trim down all the way for the windows as well and make the door and windows look like one unit. I have attached a picture of a similar door and window combo that I have completed.

Infinity, thanks for suggestion, but it actually too late for major changes. The surround trim is set, what is in the picture. The question is whether a plinth is needed, makes sense visually, or not. Thanks

We used one in the same place and it really looks nicely finished

walbels, that's where it always go. Where casing meets baseboard. or do you mean you also had a windows/door situation? Do you have a header on your door? Thanks

You don't need a plinth, it's a door not a hearth. Just let it die into the base skirting and it will be fine when the room is all trimmed and painted.

Hi Jan, thanks for feedback. Casing die on the baseboard? Isn't it usually the opposite? Upstairs it's all like that. Also, is it ok to not use plinth block even if the base and casing are the same thickness? In others words, there would no shadow. Thanks.

Base skirting dies at casing yes....... Your trim guy knows what casings look like, and what to do.....and frankly, your architect should have made the entire combo a unified window door combo, with longer windows, or eliminated the windows entirely for a six or eight foot sliding door. I wouldn't worry about a "shadow" . When you are finished and painted, you will no longer be staring at it every day. You really won't. : )
