Light weeding on a periodic basis.

In my world, this is an old English garden. when I went to school in the Cotswolds, nicer small estates and people who weren't two feet from their neighbors often grew them. It seemed to me that several times a year a small army of gardeners dug out truck loads of plants and sold them at the local markets. They created large open areas that seemed to grow in within a month or two. A world away in the high desert there are two English ladies who maintain a very similar garden nearby.
