I live in Thailand. I recently went to a temple where they charge only the foreigners an admission... and i was told i was disrespectful for smelling the flowers next to a buddha figure... I am quite certain buddha would not have minded me smelling the flowers, and i am feeling the same about buddha in the bathroom...buddhism is everywhere...that's my take on it...and it looks beautiful by the way

Donnie, I used to live in Thailand. Most likely what happened was a misunderstanding. Often, the flowers next to statues are ones that people used in prayer and placed there. Moving them is similar to moving prayer candles in a Catholic church, it's not wrong per se, but they were probably trying to tell you its best not to disturb them without having the language skills to do so.
