Design Dilemma Fireplaces

Kiva Fireplace Makeover

Just bought a home, previous owners covered the fireplace with river rock. I want to remove the rock from fireplace and walls, also the shelving. I am not sure if I should leave the band of river rock in the middle. Looking for any design ideas please.
