Need help to use Crown Molding or not.

We have a "farmhouse" that is from 1977 ish and there is 8' ceiling on the main floor (family room, kitchen, dining) I like the look of dark floors with 4 inch baseboards, can I use crown molding or is it better to stay away from, will it make rooms look too boxy?

A picture is always helpful...
A proportionately sized crown should add to your room.

A basic 3-4" crown will blend the line. As long as you are careful with your colors you will be fine.

Oh I feel so drawn to a true farmhouse and true ranch house as we swiftly become more and more removed from that way of life. Growing up we always knew and visited somebody living a more rural life. I miss it so much! Crown molding seems so classic traditional, formal and I wonder if there is some other architectural feature more related to that "farmhouse" style that we could explore for detailing ideas to enhance your home and capture your imagination? Some things that come to mind are; beaded board wainscoting, wood ceiling boards, trimmed out windows with wood window sills, wall stenciling etc... Pictures would be good. Are you open to exploring other ideas?
