Help! What color handrails, shutters, door and gutters??!!!

1979 duplex. Moved in recently. Really love the beach cottage look. Do I keep the same brown ugliness to match the twin home or can I brighten it up and update it some? I'm on a tight budget but not scared of hard work and paint. However, I am design and color challenged. Any thoughts or comments will be much appreciated. PS - I know the house is ugly but it has good bones.

I think you need the cooperation of your new neighbor next door.
I see your point about all the brown. I would get to know your neighbor and see if you can develop a relationship and then
cooperate on some changes.

We have the same color scheme and are trying to figure put what to do with colors...we also have brick. Did you ever decide what to do? I really want black shutters and a red door to look good but just don't think it will with the brown (which isn't an option to replace in our case.

At the very least put new color on the door and shutters.since you mention beachy use warm sunny colors that will complement the brown roof not just make it uglier. You also have the opportunity to paint the window frames another color.

Some sort of Tuscan yellow(pale golden) for the door ,shutter, and railing, And sneak a little accent color on the window frames....conservatively a light golden brown

Or a little more daringly a green to match the little green trees in front of the window

Also u may want to paint the entire cubby area around the door ...walls and ceiling. ..this will create a cozy little inviting welcome to your guests

Were you and your neighbor able to agree?

If not, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to at least repaint the recessed area around your front door, the railing for the steps, the shutters and/or the door itself any color you want that doesn't seriously clash with the siding but it would be better to leave the siding and the brown gutter and trim at the roofline the same. If you paint much more than that without your neighbor also doing so, you could end up with something awful. A white, off white, light cream or even a sage green( particularly a muted shade), wouldn't be all that apt to clash with the cream colored siding and brown gutter and trim.
