ceiling height dilemma

Hi there, I have a ceiling height dilemma and simply need to know how to make my ceilings SEEM higher. My ceilings were just shy of 8 feet but we opened up the house and had to add beams which were about 1 1/2 inches longer than our ceiling allowed so now I have 7 ft 9 " ceilings. I feel like that is all I notice (the ceilings and boards just went in today so I am sure I won't notice as much once all is put back together). Any advice on making these ceilings seem higher? it is my kitchen and living space only. front hall is 2 storey. thx so much!!

Crown molding helps. You can find a variety of styles to match your house and decor.

Another trick would be to paint the ceiling a shade lighter than the walls (same color family, if the walls are colored). Goodluck!

Generally, to create the illusion of more height, take the colour off your walls and make them two tints light for the ceiling - this gives the effect of continuity and height... I have never been a fan of crown moulding, but it is very common in the US, but wonder if you are having upper cabinets are they necessary?

Looks like a great new space! Keep the walls a light neutral and paint the ceiling the same shade or a shade or two lighter, but not white as that cuts the eye. Crown moulding could work if you have it wrap the ceiling more than the wall as it will grab that space. If the upper cabinets are at the ceiling line than crown moulding may not work so well. Thanks so much for all of this! I hadn't thought of the 2 shades lighter than the walls or the crown wrapping the ceiling more than the wall. I'm not a fan of crown but will try to make something work. Thanks so much again!

and I just remeasured and I missed an inch - 7 ft 10 " - woohoo!

oh and yes, my upper cabinets are already made (or most of the boxes at least). the long wall is broken up with the hood and 2 shelves and the short wall has a bench so hopefully not too heavy - thx!
