FALL 2016 Green Giant color change UPDATE.
I added some fall foliage images of the GG's turning a rust color during the Fall die off or shedding. These were taken on Nov 16, 2016. I live in Zone 8, Alabama 4 hours from the Gulf of Mexico. The Leland's are still growing as the fall temps are just starting to close in to the high 30's at night but, go back into the 60's and 70's during the days until Jan or Feb. The extreme drought we've had this year may have contributed to the "rustier" than normal discoloration of the GG's. They were maintained with adequate watering all summer as you can see from the earlier images during the year. The "rusty" look will grow back into new foliage like they did in the Spring of 2016. The Leland's haven't started their transition as of yet.
I will say that Fall colors of leaves on the landscape will differ from year to year depending on how much rain they have prior and during the seasonal change. Many Lob Lolly's here are browner than usual but, pine straw is never green anyway now is it? I hope this helps out some on the same ole question during the fall of "Why is my conifer looking brown or rusty looking"
After a much needed soaking and windy conditions the latest images show the dropping of the "rusty colored" fans from the GG's. You can see the evidence on the ground surface images under the trees.
The Leland's are still growing and haven't started any color changes as of 11/29/2016.
The Leylands started their shed in April 2017. All green as of June 1, 2017.
Spring 2017 update:
The trees didn't sleep much in zone 8 due to a milder winter than 20115-16. The trees fed off of the punched 12' deep holes filled with slow release fruit tree fertilizer.
Compare the images from 2016 (non dated) to the dated 2017 images and answer that question of how fast do the GG's and Leylands grow in a year.
I lightly raked back the drip line mulch and drove a new grid of 12" deep holes with a maddox and filled them with 13-13-13 this time. I lightly sprinkled the triple 13 all around the surface of the drip line as well.
I raked the wood much back over the drip line disturbed area and the rains have activated it and the trees are busting loose on the growth spurt. Check the GG's and Leyland album for comparison.
