shelf dimensions. - Your work is always a stand-out on Houzz. I love how you manage space and light. That said: how deep are the bookcase shelves? I'm haggling with our contractor & my husband over 9 and 3/4 inch shelves vs. 8 inch shelves. Thanks for stepping into this! »
Smith & Vansant Architects PC Thank you for the nice comments. I am not willing to step into the fray, but these shelves provide 12 1/4 inches depth of usable space measured from the back to the front of the nosing.
Can you provide details of the under- or in-shelf lighting? - I see that the objects are illuminated from below on the upper shelf and from above on the lower shelf. Do you have a source for that type of lighting? Thanks! »
Smith & Vansant Architects PC Hello,
These shelves are illuminated using Tokistar's Advantage series low-voltage undercabinet lighting. You will want to carefully plan your transformer location and bulb spacing with this line of lighting.
Hope that helps!
Library Ladder - I contacted Putnam Ladders which you recommended to one of the other questions but they said that they did not make this ladder & they don't use the metal rails on their ladders like the one in the photo. the library ladder in the photo is perfect for my project & I would so appreciate knowing your source. Thank you so much for your kind response. By the way, you've given me inspiration for the loft in my house where I would otherwise have not been as creative. Thanks again. Rainey, Naples, FL »
Smith & Vansant Architects PC Sorry, I misled you - this particular ladder is not from Putnam Ladders, this particular rolling library ladder was custom-built by Alaco Ladder in California.
Hope that helps!
Price of the ladder only - My question is how can i get the ladder with all the hardware to install and also the price. Can you please let me know thank you. »
Smith & Vansant Architects PC Hello,
Sorry, I cannot give you the cost of this, but a good online source for library ladders is Putnam Rolling Ladder. You will have to provide some specifics about height, hardware, and finishes for your own installation. Here is a link to their site. http://www.putnamrollingladder.com/ Good luck.

8. This floor-to-ceiling bookshelf is the perfect way to turn part of a living room into a library. Houzzers loved the rolling ladder and the clever addition of built-in display shelves to show off collections or other tchotchkes.
This wall of books is designed with an integral railing for a rolling ladder as well as lighting for two horizontal openings used for displaying objects. In proportion and execution the shelves are minimal yet elegant.
You don't need built-ins (rows of matching Billy bookcases from Ikea will do the trick), but they do look good, don't they? And books are their own form of decor, adding color, texture and personality to a room (and to a person, for that matter).
