I'm a fan of shelves that are painted in contrasting colors. In my house, if I decide not to go the wallpaper route, I'll definitely paint the back of my shelves a different color than the shelves themselves. In this case, I especially like how the backgrounds are slightly different shades. Not enough that the difference is jarring, or distracts from what's displayed, but just enough to be interesting.

A great trick to remember when you are displaying books on a bookshelf is that you can also display other objects with them. The sculptures and vases here make the bookcase more of an art display than merely a place to stick your books.

Think Vertical: Use Height for Storage. This is one of the first things I notice in a client’s home when I look at storage issues. Often, people simply overlook the height of their ceilings and the amount of storage that this can provide. Look for furniture pieces that take advantage of that height. Not only will higher pieces add variety and interest to the space, they also bring the eye upwards and can enhance the feeling of spaciousness.
