Gran sir D Barbados

Modern Rendering, Denver

This airy residence in Barbados represents a contemporary off-the-grid environment conducive to tropical outdoor living. Two inward-facing volumes define a linear open-air courtyard framed by an elegant two-story structure designed to enhance natural ventilation. An inventive 'wind scoop' effect captures prevailing island breezes while venting warm air through clerestory vents above, while linear pools on the roof deck and courtyard serve as thermal mass reservoirs for a radiant cooling system designed to siphon water though the building. Vertical and horizontal shading elements functionally temper the space while generating a play of shadow and light, creating a dynamic living environment that changes with the movement of the sun. In addition to drawing precedence from traditional Barbados materials and construction methods, a natural coral 'ruin' wall, native to Barbados, is juxtaposed against the minimalist structure, anchoring the residence to the site and local building context. The wall also mediates the juxtaposition of old and new referencing the protective envelope approach of nineteen-century Barbados architecture.
