For all of its sculpture and drama, there can be a disarming quality to Spanish furniture. This version of the Vizcaya draws on the local tradition of ceramic tile not only formed and glazed by hand but also fired in ovens themselves the work of another century. The resulting colors are bolder, more varied, and subject to the random flashing of the fire. The iron stretcher still remains a grand flourish. Scrolled legs remain open and graphic, still revealing themselves only over time.
The Vizcaya is a side table, a nightstand, or a small console. The dramatic legs suggest turning the frieze drawers to the side. One colorful tradition, but many ways to use it.
