Kenny Grono It is recommended that the distance from the centerline of toilet to any bath fixture, wall, or other obstacle should be at least 18 inches, but by code it is only required to be a minimum distance of 15 inches.

Philip Shie deshy, the edges can be finished by edgebanding, which is veneer that comes in rolls of various widths... 2 basic types: one that is pre-glued and you can just iron it on, or the another (such as Fastcap brand) type that you just peel-and-stick (much faster)... You would need to trim the edges to fit. Some people choose to expose edges for the right kind of plywood such as Apply-ply or baltic birch plywood.
Amanda Simons, lumber yards are always better. Not only can you find a much larger selection of plywood, the prices are typically lower than big box stores for the same type of lower end ply. Just know that some places won't cut the plywood down if you don't have a car/truck large enough to transport the entire sheet (4' x 8')

julie77777 ddelora and Lyn T -- I am with you.......I cannot imagine having to clean grout on my kitchen walls near my stove and my sink! I am starting some remodeling and can't deide what to do .... all these modern backsplashes are lovely to look at, but wow..... I currently have two coats of a very good paint behind my stove and it cleans up great. I have decided to definitely go with the short (3"?) backsplash that normally is attached to the countertop; absolutely cannot imagine NOT having that right behind my sink. Then above that, not sure yet... Low budget for backsplash --

jacksonbeth We really like our new tile backsplash because it is unique. We took advantage of a product by Web Don called Kitchen Palette..it is very nice, allows for interchangable design of your entire backsplash:

Keeping the drywall dust out of the grout is the hardest part. Make sure to tape off the tile install before sanding.
I like the Ram Board down way before the drywall crews show up. Many times these crews are messy so make sure they do not trash the floors. If you can get most of the drywall done first this is best. We drywall'd the entire bathroom and just left off the L-Beads where the tile meet the drywall. I set the bead flush with the tile and then feathered out the drywall mud.
I like my tile installs to cure out for 1-3 weeks before grouting so we often set the tile and then fine tune the drywall, prime and paint. Grout last.
If you are worried about drywall dust wrecking your grout try using Laticrete's Spectra Lock Pro epoxy grout. The stuff is almost bullet proof. With regular grout (cementious) you can really make it look bad if the drywall dust gets worked into the grout joints. JW
