Chris Hill Would you like to see me do a detailed "Build a Box" project and cover all of those things? I did that once before for Lowe's Creative Ideas magazine a few years ago.

Chris Hill ccdavis - You'll need to cover up that white, but you could create the look of the wood grain using a grain roller/pad. You could, for example, paint the ceiling a light brown, then use a slightly darker brown on the grain roller/pad.

Chris Hill Spallina Interiors - sounds like your oak is pre-finished if your tinted varnish is chipping, or you're trying to apply too thick a coat or multiple coats without prepping in between coats. What you apply has to have something to adhere to, so you'll need to sand or strip.

Chris Hill boo2u - If you apply a top coat before the wash, the wash will not absorb into the wood and will pretty much be wasting your time. Because this technique thins water-based paint with water, the raw wood will soak up the water, thereby raising the grain - the same thing happens with pre-made water-based stains. You can sand the wood before applying the wash with a fine-grit sandpaper (220) as you should, but the grain will still raise, particularly on the end grain, with a water-based product. It won't take much sanding between the wash coats, especially if you sanded well before started. A top coat should be applied as the last finishing step in this process.

Chris Hill amberm145 - Absolutely you can use a water-based stain. This is just another way of doing it that's relatively inexpensive, particularly if you're using paint you may already have. Minwax's water-based product works well, I've used it many times, but I can customize a color with paint by mixing to my heart's content. Like I said, just another option for folks. Work with what works well for you.

Chris Hill Strip it and go for it! I suggest you try Minwax's PolyCrylic as the topcoat over the gray. I use it all the time with no discernible color change and it holds up well. I have three boys myself, so anything I do has to hold up to their abuse.

jukesgrrl I stained a raw wood picture frame with food coloring from my pantry. I've had it hung up for years now and the color hasn't even faded, which I expected.
