Business Description
A woman owned and family run countertop fabricator in MD specializing in unique and unusual natural stones.

To work with Granite Grannies is to return to a time when quality was prized above quick fixes, when natural elements were custom crafted to last in your home for a lifetime, and when businesses truly believed that you, the customer, were the most important part of their business.

Granite Grannies is a fabricator and installer of custom natural stone countertops. We offer granite, marble, soapstone, quartzite, onyx, and quartz. We specialize in unique and off-the-beaten-path stones, whether exotic or standard priced. We also focus on custom design. We work with the customer to make sure the stone is not only designed with their lifestyle and tastes in mind, but also crafted to fit the unique space where it’s installed. We are a small, family and woman owned shop that focuses on one beautiful kitchen, bath, bar, or fireplace at a time. We are known in our community for having an unprecedented selection of beautiful stones, and a team that is courteous, professional, dedicated, and rather funny if we do say so ourselves.

I wouldn't mix those two. What about a honed or leathered piece in the same color or a honed or leathered absolute black.

I agree, while contrasting colors can work there is such a thing as contrasting TOO much.

I would recommend searching for suppliers or finding a high end fabricator who can do the legwork and find you that stone. It and very similar granites are found under several names, so it can be tricky to search.

Namely: Juperana Delicatus Granite, Delicatus Granite, Ice Brown Granite

I (possibly unfortunately) fell in love with a granite counter at the kitchen cabinet maker/installers showroom and although we looked for two weeks at every other colour there was I couldn't get it out of my head so we ended up ordering it for the kitchen. It's black with swaths of white and cream running through it. It's called Titanium. Thank you for your suggestions and I did look at these type of colours too but it just wasn't working for me. I hope I haven't made a big mistake LOL.

It does not make a stone stain more easily. Granite is very difficult to stain. Brown Fantasy look GREAT leathered or honed. I've had slabs of that in the shop honed or leathered before.

Here are some projects in a medium tone honed or leathered granite: A Historic DC Row Home Renovation- Eastern Market

According to suppliers this is actually granite, so it shouldn't be difficult to maintain at all. Depending on how much pattern is in your individual slab, it may show grease a bit more than a lighter granite, but honestly, I don't think you should have a problem. Some places can send slabs in to have them honed or brushed, but it's much cheaper and more reliable to just pick out slabs already honed or brushed. Honed and brushed are much easier to keep clean than polished (not that polished is difficult). You won't get cooking stains on either, but if you are genuinely worried about finger prints, then go with the honed or brushed finish.

Similar granites (if you have trouble finding this exact one) are Cosmic Black Granite, Bianco Tifone Granite, Bright Black Granite, Copacabana Granite, Mystery Black Granite, and Spectrus Granite.

We've installed plenty kitchens in Cosmic Black, Bianco Tifone, and a few other similar ones, and never had complaints.

Hmmm. Do you have pictures of the space? Golden Sparkle Granite or something similar would look good with the travertine. I recommend something with movement, to play up the nature around. That said, perhaps something a bit bolder, like Rainforest Brown Granite or that same granite with a leathered (textured finish):

Rainforest Brown Leathered Granite Bathroom

On the lighter side, Kashmir Gold Granite might be a subtle, but elegant choice: Leathered Kashmir Gold Granite

Hope this helps!

Not if it's granite. You should be just fine. Just make sure you buy it from a reputable granite fabrication company.

This is a similar granite color....maybe that will help.
Can you be more specific about what else you will be using in the kitchen (maybe cabinet color, floor color, etc). Pictures would be helpful as well!

Or it might fall off? I'm confused about this question? The only way I can imaging the edge falling off is if you have big trees above that might fall on it. The edge should be just a shaping of the same continuous piece that the counter is made of. That said, a cover when not in use will keep your granite clean and prevent dark granite from fading a bit over the years.

I'm not sure on the floor, but I've only heard good things about travertine floors. As far as the counters, as long as you keep it sealed, you should be fine. As an extra precaution, I would recommend Not keeping fruit, tomatoes, or anything really acidic sitting directly on the counter for days at a time (rotting fruit releases powerful liquid). Other than that, it should look great for years.

I maintain my honed black granite by rubbing olive oil into the stone about every six weeks. Buff it in to get that subtle lustre, the oil helps resist water marks and other liquids. I have had it for ten years and I am very pleased with its performance in a hard working kitchen.

Thanks, Maria! I will keep that in mind. Knowing that you've had honed granite for 10 years and still like it is comforting.
