We were not sure if we should wait or add the porch, it was really something I wanted and felt the house needed as it is saltbox colonial. Adding it was the best thing we ever did. We spend many a night with family and friends enjoying the comfort of our lovely porch and it has added immense beauty to our home as well.

I must give credit to our builder for that idea. We are in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, so it is very hilly here. That is why the front porch sits so high off of the ground and there are so many steps up to the porch. The only somewhat level place on our lot is in our backyard, but we didn't want the house to be at the very rear of the lot. Frankly, I would have preferred the porch not be so high, but the topography of the lot dictated it. Because there is so much area between the floor of the porch and the ground, the builder felt that latticework would be too busy and distracting. He used dark stained thick horizontal 1 X 6 boards with space between them to allow for air circulation. There is a door around on the right side of the porch to allow access to the area under the porch. We then planted lots of dark shrubbery (purple loropetalum) around the porch to help draw your eyes up to the house and not to draw too much attention to how high the house sits off the ground. Thanks for asking!

@reedb56, I would think that will work, but I try a layout on paper to see how it fits together. SCR

I am a naturally clean person who does not like a lot of clutter, but I cringe at the idea of staging a home. I won't do it, but then, my house probably doesn't need it. I sold my old house in 4 days with multiple offers. I think people need to have the ability to see past your stuff when looking at a house. After all, your stuff is going with you! I have that ability, I guess many don't. I also know some people aren't naturally clean and have a lot of clutter (decorations) out.
Good tips for those who need them.
