About Us

Architecture firm specializing in residential remodeling and new construction, commercial tenant improvement, and multi-family apartments. Thornton is a licensed architect and has been running his own practice for 15 years in the East Bay. After graduating from the University of Oregon with a BA in Architecture, Thornton moved to the Bay Area in 1989 and began work for award-winning architecture firms in San Francisco, including Berger Detmer Architects and GEZ Architects & Engineers, where he gained experience in retail design, lighting design, and multi-family projects. After branching out on his own, Thornton specialized in renovations of historic homes in the City of Piedmont. His projects have now been built in various cities throughout the Bay Area, with styles ranging from classic traditional to modern to urban. Thornton has an interest in regional architecture as well as ecological design and he is LEED accredited. “Planning a project involves a series of careful interrelated considerations. A successful project is a balance between owner’s needs, constructability, and cost. To that end, my mission is to serve as a client’s guide in the journey of planning a space or structure. If you want a successful building project, build it twice — the first time, through careful planning and the second time in actual construction.”
