This house had been deteriorating and in use as a rental until 2005 when a series of renovations were begun to erase years of neglect. An awkward daylight basement was gutted down to bare earth to create a guest suite, extra kitchen, storage, laundry, and media room. The walls of the main floor were re-plastered to eliminate a heavy stucco texture. The kitchen and powder room were gutted. And a breakfast room was re-imagined as a small TV room and lounge off the kitchen. One of the four bedrooms on the top floor was converted to a home office while the smallest of the bedrooms was converted to a walk-in-closet.

Tom Gilbert, photographer. The kids' game room serves a multitude of purposes. Steel beams were erected to support the second floor so absolutely no noise would filter to the main family room downstairs. Solid knotty alder doors enclose the room when desired. A full-sized pool table also serves as a ping-pong table. A special closet was included to store the ping-pong top when not in use. The 9' shuffleboard table was custom made to match the pool table; the foosball table is situated near the windows providing a bird's eye view of the golf course behind the property. A raised fireplace is faced with porcelain tile. A custom crown treatment includes double-lit knotty alder and glass tile. A bar height game table also overlooks the back yard. The second, smaller bar table is perfect for playing the wifi gaming screen. The theatre, theatre kitchen and full bath are a step away. A flex room offers a multi-purpose option.

Open-Plan Bedrooms There's something luxurious — and a little bit naughty — about a tub in the bedroom. Like the open-air showers at tropical resorts, the idea of bathing out in the open can be both liberating and titillating. On the other hand, open baths were not uncommon in tenements and rural houses at the turn of the last century. I've showered in many a pre-war kitchen, and the experience was less than glamorous. So what do we make of this trend? Is it hotel-inspired? Poverty chic? Or just a clever way to fit a big tub into a small space? Images: Living Etc. , Grey Crawford, Belle Maison, Urban Spaces, Country Home & Interiors Tags bedroom , bathroom Related Links Share Comments (35) I've never understood this trend. This would automatically cross any potential home off of my list. Unless I could afford a live-in maid to make sure it stayed clean it would drive me insane. Even then there's something about it that just makes me uncomfortable. posted by mattab on January 8th 2010 at 11:03am view mattab's profile Not even a partition just in case you chose to close off the area? Really?! Hate it! posted by pinkred on January 8th 2010 at 11:09am view pinkred's profile I think bathtubs/hottubs in the room are gross ala something out of Scarface miami 1980s. I have a split-level 70s condo with the vanity in an alcove off my bedroom (between the bathroom and closet) and love it though, so go figure. posted by ec05 on January 8th 2010 at 11:51am view ec05's profile Since it is just a tub and not a full bathroom with toilet and sink, it must be for people who like to take long, luxurious baths to relax, maybe while reading or listening to music. It is definitely not for efficiently getting ready in the morning for your day, and I don't imagine that it would be used every day, so you probably wouldn't need to clean it daily. I'm not a bath person, but I can see how someone would enjoy this. posted by geckotoes1 on January 8th 2010 at 11:59am view geckotoes1's profil
