My mother had an old Tudor home and the basement (servants quarters) had the original flagstone. It had never been sealed and had a beautiful patina. The sink was also carved from solid stone. Her new home is Edwardian and has flagstones in the kitchen. They clean up well and hide the dirt from her two big dogs.

I LOVE the travertine floor we put down in our kitchen, hallway, laundry room and powder room last year. We live in Texas, so it's nice to have a cool floor during the 9 months of warm or hot weather. The hardness doesn't bother my feet or back at all. We've had no issues with the height of the flooring (vs the hardwood floors elsewhere or where closing doors is a concern for example). But the thing I love the MOST about this beautiful floor is that it is super easy to maintain. For one thing, it's almost scary how dirty these floors can be without anyone being able to tell - I have to remind myself to clean them sometimes because they never look dirty. All I do is sweep them and then either steam them on occasion or run over them with a very slightly damp mop. That's all there is to it.

The first time my daughter saw the flooring, she gasped and said, "Mom, this looks like the floor of an ancient cathedral!" She was singing my tune with that one!

I am wondering about Travertine in earthquake country on a raised floor. I don't want headaches; I want it for its beauty but it is a floor after all.
