Southern Beach Getaway in WaterColor
Private Residence / WaterColor, Florida
Architect: Geoff Chick & Associates
Builder: Chris Clark Construction
The E. F. San Juan team collaborated closely with architect Geoff Chick, builder Chris Clark, interior designer Allyson Runnels, and the homeowners to bring their design vision to reality. This included custom interior and exterior millwork, pecky cypress ceilings in various rooms of the home, different types of wall and ceiling paneling in each upstairs bedroom, custom pecky cypress barn doors and beams in the master suite, Euro-Wall doors in the living area, Weather Shield windows and doors throughout, Georgia pine porch ceilings, and Ipe porch flooring.
Challenges:
Allyson and the homeowners wanted each of the children’s upstairs bedrooms to have unique features, and we addressed this from a millwork perspective by producing different types of wall and ceiling paneling for each of these rooms. The homeowners also loved the look of pecky cypress and wanted to see this unique type of wood featured as a highlight throughout the home.
Solution:
In the main living area and kitchen, the coffered ceiling presents pecky cypress stained gray to accent the tiled wall of the kitchen. In the adjoining hallway, the pecky cypress ceiling is lightly pickled white to make a subtle contrast with the surrounding white paneled walls and trim. The master bedroom has two beautiful large pecky cypress barn doors and several large pecky cypress beams that give it a cozy, rustic yet Southern coastal feel. Off the master bedroom is a sitting/TV room featuring a pecky cypress ceiling in a stunning rectangular, concentric pattern that was expertly installed by Edgar Lara and his skilled team of finish carpenters.
We also provided twelve-foot-high floor-to-ceiling Euro-Wall Systems doors in the living area that lend to the bright and airy feel of this space, as do the Weather Shield windows and doors that were used throughout the home. Finally, the porches’ rich, South Georgia pine ceilings and chatoyant Ipe floors create a warm contrast to the bright walls, columns, and railings of these comfortable outdoor spaces. The result is an overall stunning home that exhibits all the best characteristics of the WaterColor community while standing out with countless unique custom features.

Completed on a small budget, this hard working kitchen refused to compromise on style. The upper and lower perimeter cabinets, sink and countertops are all from IKEA. The vintage schoolhouse pendant lights over the island were an eBay score, and the pendant over the sink is from Restoration Hardware. The BAKERY letters were made custom, and the vintage metal bar stools were an antique store find, as were many of the accessories used in this space. Oh, and in case you were wondering, that refrigerator was a DIY project compiled of nothing more than a circa 1970 fridge, beadboard, moulding, and some fencing hardware found at a local hardware store.

We transformed this room from an outdated southwest style space to this elegant Spanish style living room. The fireplace was redesigned and an arched passage to the dining was added to better define the spaces. The balance of materials that help create this space are the old world terra cotta tiles, smooth plaster walls, hand carved stone fireplace and rough wood stained ceiling.

The design of this refined mountain home is rooted in its natural surroundings. Boasting a color palette of subtle earthy grays and browns, the home is filled with natural textures balanced with sophisticated finishes and fixtures. The open floorplan ensures visibility throughout the home, preserving the fantastic views from all angles. Furnishings are of clean lines with comfortable, textured fabrics. Contemporary accents are paired with vintage and rustic accessories.
To achieve the LEED for Homes Silver rating, the home includes such green features as solar thermal water heating, solar shading, low-e clad windows, Energy Star appliances, and native plant and wildlife habitat.

The Port Ludlow Residence is a compact, 2400 SF modern house located on a wooded waterfront property at the north end of the Hood Canal, a long, fjord-like arm of western Puget Sound. The house creates a simple glazed living space that opens up to become a front porch to the beautiful Hood Canal.
The east-facing house is sited along a high bank, with a wonderful view of the water. The main living volume is completely glazed, with 12-ft. high glass walls facing the view and large, 8-ft.x8-ft. sliding glass doors that open to a slightly raised wood deck, creating a seamless indoor-outdoor space. During the warm summer months, the living area feels like a large, open porch. Anchoring the north end of the living space is a two-story building volume containing several bedrooms and separate his/her office spaces.
The interior finishes are simple and elegant, with IPE wood flooring, zebrawood cabinet doors with mahogany end panels, quartz and limestone countertops, and Douglas Fir trim and doors. Exterior materials are completely maintenance-free: metal siding and aluminum windows and doors. The metal siding has an alternating pattern using two different siding profiles.
The house has a number of sustainable or “green” building features, including 2x8 construction (40% greater insulation value); generous glass areas to provide natural lighting and ventilation; large overhangs for sun and rain protection; metal siding (recycled steel) for maximum durability, and a heat pump mechanical system for maximum energy efficiency. Sustainable interior finish materials include wood cabinets, linoleum floors, low-VOC paints, and natural wool carpet.

We took a large kitchen that could be overwhelming and transformed the space to
create a sense of intimacy by using earthy materials like the wood beams on
the ceiling and wooden cabinetry and mixes of natural stones.
The other challenge is the request from the client to have a contemporary
approach to the design but making sure that it is still warm and inviting
for their use.
-Contrasting materials like the heavy blackened steel and granite were
used
with soft, natural materials to create a balance between serenity and
masculinity.
What is unique is the play of mix of materials in a variety of finishes
from natural sandblasted granite to a honed limestone combine with a solid
surface material Caesar Stone. The cabinets (cabinet maker-Mueller Nichols)
has two different wood combination from a lighter vertical Eucalyptus and
darker vertical Walnut (running horizontal on the cabinets) But the look is
subtle since the mix is still overall earthy, natural and tone on tone
change.
The old beams in the ceiling were used. It was painted over the
years so
we stripped it down to the natural material and added cross beams to create
the grid patterns. Rustic cross beams combine with beautiful phoenician
plaster on the ceilings. Built in speakers that can be troweled over with
plastering so the speakers
are totally hidden in the ceilings.
Multi level islands to serve multiple activities from cleaning,
prepping, chopping and eating. Butcher block lower level for easy chopping
and cantilivered to create a more dynamic and sculptural quality. ce the
clients really cook in this kitchen that the list of appliances
for extraordinary. Pizza oven, built in coffee maker, steamer, double
convection ovens, 6 burner pro style cooktop, 48 inch refrigerator, 2
refrigerator drawers, 2 dishwashers, wine refrigerators etc...
Contrasting materials like the heavy dark steel and granite were used with soft, natural materials to create a balance between serenity and masculinity. The seamless windows highlight and connect the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The clients are gourmet cooks that enjoy entertaining and cooking so many types of cooking equipments like a six burner cook top with grill, a brick oven and a speed oven as well as a pantry that is connected to the kitchen were used. There are also two islands in the kitchen which serves different functions. One is used mainly for prepping and cleaning while the other is used as a serving area and a place to gather.
A cigar-box-style cabinet in walnut sets off the granite countertop on the island, and a tongue-and-groove finish shows craftsmanship.
"We layered materials, textures and colors to create a space that was natural and inviting, yet in keeping with the modern style of the rest of the house," says the designer.
Using different kinds of wood and stains brings a sense of intimacy to this large walk-in pantry.
