Go with what you like. I have porcelain tile in my kitchen, dining room, pantry,laundry area, coat close and entry hallway as they all run together. I really like it, but am planning on putting hardwood in the living room, bedrooms and other hall. I think it's a personal choice.

The ony thing I will say about the tile is that it's slippery for the dogs to walk on so I have a lot of throw rugs around to help them get around easier.

I prefer porcelain tiles for the kitchen. What color is your hardwood? You could go either lighter or darker as long as the tiles complement the wood. If the kitchen doesn't get much light or is on the small side, lighter would be my choice. Bring some samples home and see how they look.
