I hate to say it but I do think painting the cabinets is your best option. It will be difficult to achieving a more contemporary look leaving the cabinets oak. Paint the cabinets a light taupe and add a light stone tile.

I really think you need to paint the cabinets! They're going to continue to shout "oak" at you until you do so. New chrome hardware on the cabinets would help a little, but nothing would help as much as painting the cabinets. Then with painted cabinets, you could choose wood flooring if you wanted instead of tile. Please think about it as it will affect your flooring choice.
