Need advice in updating our old style mansard roof.

Help! We just bought a house and I need some advice on how to update the look of the exterior . I hate the mansard roof and need some suggestions on how to make it look better. We are getting new windows and white shutters. Also, Should I paint the door? Colours?

Actually, I like your house a lot. It has interesting details that need to be highlighted. Find a color you love and paint your front door and any other paintable wood trim that color. DO NOT ADD SHUTTERS. And, no white. Your roof is brownish and hard for us to see exactly the tone. Find a paint color on a strip that goes with that brown. Search for it on-line and find colors which will compliment the brown. I am thinking a green.

Yes, paint the door one of your favorite colors so that you will love it. Entrance door is always the focal point and should be a different color than shutters or trim. Do that first. Then take a second look.

I don't see any windows appropriate for shutters? Are they behind the tree? Besides painting the door, I would think about redoing the front steps. They look a little small for the entrance to such a nice house...no railings, no proper place to stand when entering. I assume its a detached house?

Thanks everyone! What colour do you think would look good for the front door? We have a big window behind the trees that you guys can't see. All windows in the house are being replaced. So you don't think I should add shutters to the front window? Also , what colour should i paint the brick?

First choose a paint pallet for the brick (go away yellow 1970 style brick) and trim. In the area of the upper windows paint the surfaces around and below the window dark so that it appears the windows fill up the entire space. This does not include the trim abutting the roof. A small piece of wrought iron in that blank space would give it a French touch which is what mansard style roofs are about.

There's no way to hide a mansard roof, so go with it. A French country style would be the most obvious choice. I think if you rounded the tops of the upper window surrounds, and painted the brick you'd be halfway there. Provençal blue shutters are classic, but warm taupe trim and windows with cream bricks could work and be a bit less "French". A traditional front door and traditional mullioned windows would complete the look.

This type of metal trim below the front windows would also bring you closer to the French country look.
