fast & short-term solution?

this house was built in 1784. ceiling was already low but in 1970 when water pipes were brought across the ceiling this acoustic tile was the quick cover. the plan in a couple of years is to pull it all out- big project- no longer using that water line- MEANWHILE- it's hideous. am considering option of hanging that beadboard textured wallpaper on the ceiling- it's so low that I can reach it without a ladder- has anybody tried this? I know it's a 2 person job. I just can't stand it as is. open to other temporary fixes. thanks!

Being such a bright white it really stands out . Perhaps painting it a golden color like in the wallpaper will make it blend into the room more.

How far in the future is the planned ceiling renovation? Perhaps it should be moved up on the priority list, because I think papering this sucker will be a waste of time and effort. I suspect it wouldn't be that much more time and effort to just remove the ceiling and the water lines, move the duct, fix the old walls and ceiling, and paint.

I would just make do and live with it, if two years is the intended target of tearing the ceiling tiles down. Like the above comment, I'd move it up on the project list and start room by room.

Agree with Grover, papering over the tile is a waste of time, a kind of lipstick on a pig project. Have you thought about just removing the acoustic tile to see what's underneath? The original ceiling, with exposed water pipes painted white, might look better than what is there now. It would only be temporary and would get you halfway into the demo you need to do anyway prior to the full repair.

Oh it's definitely the next big project. But requires professional help and at this point I have more time than money. Maybe I will try Retroearths idea and paint it- flat to kill the glare- there are 4 doors in this room- all white- maybe paint them, too?

flopsycat, I went into the attic above and pulled up some of the (gorgeous wide) floorboards and there's a hazmat lollapalooza in there. I have to get one more kid out of college and then the demo can commence. I have impulsively started projects while muttering "I can't stand this another MINUTE" and lived to regret it more than once. you're all right about the wallpaper. thanks. think paint will have to appease me for now.

Those doors alone could be hazardous; have they been tested for lead?

Here is the ceiling and that tiny crown painted to match the wallpaper. And then the doors and trim painted as well.

wow, thanks! looks so much better. We are treating them as if they are lead and cleaning up the doors- outside- no kids or indoor pets or pregnant folk here-haven't gotten to that one yet. love the pale green. Thanks so much!!
