Bar pulls & bin pulls?

I want to update my kitchen cabinet hardware. Currently I have one hole in each door & drawer, but I love the look of longer bar pulls. I know it's an easy fix to drill an extra hole in the doors, but the drawers would require patching the center hole for the look I want.
Is patching a cabinet hole relatively easy? Will it look decent afterward (that's my main concern)?
Or - do bin pulls (which would mask the center drawer hole) coordinate with bar pulls? The only photos I've seen with bin pulls don't include bar pulls on the doors.

Bar pulls and bin pulls are a style clash and neither go very well with your traditional cabinets. Look for something more transitional. You will not be able to fill and patch thermofoil. So whatever you choose must reuse the existing holes, or add backplates.

I agree with Sophie. Also what kind of bar pull do you have in mind? I think The European ones will look off on your cabinets. Maybe you can work in pulls like this photo and keep your drawer knobs. (Usually you see the pulls on the drawers, but you could at least hold them up to see how it looks).

You can use backplates. They work for knobs or handles. I wouldn't use backplates with bar pulls. They would take away from the minimalist look of the pull.

I love the look of modern bar pulls (approx 6" long), but I was afraid they would clash with my cabinets :(

I really, really want to modernize my kitchen but my budget doesn't allow me to redo my cabinets, & as they're thermofoil there seems to be little I can do to update them without getting rid of them completely (I wish!). Are there any good "transitional" hardware styles anyone can suggest that will allow me to modernize to a degree without looking tacky?

Without seeing the rest of your kitchen, it's difficult to identify a style direction. I think that square pulls have a more modern look and could be utilized with your existing drilled holes.

This is a glimpse - I'm in the process of painting (the green color is the final result, from a very deep red) so the rest of the kitchen is less accurate looking. I'm hoping to do concrete counters in the near future - the white Formica will not be staying!

I think flopsycat has the right idea. Here is another style that comes to mind. I think trying to work with your existing holes and cabinet style will better achieve an updated look - I have seen in person that putting those long pulls on traditional cabinets will look off and have the reverse effect. A slightly more modern knob will look intentional.
