How small is too small for a kitchen island?

    You don't want to have less than a 30" corridor or aisle in your kitchen. So if you take a floor plan of a kitchen, you wouldn't want less than 30" from the front of the counter to the next counter. If you layout your island and it is less than this, your kitchen is too small.

    Not to contradict you but the minimum allowance is 36" and even that's cutting it too close. Most designers shoot for somewhere between 39" and 42" from counter to counter.

    Yes, Paul, you are right with the 36" - I actually had an apartment with an island that had a 30" corridor aisle and it was awful! Thank you for correcting me. :)

    This kitchen was extremely functional. The island has a pop up outlet bar which is very nice. So much better than installing outlets around the island- we would love to build this again
