Most people who do this, especially in newer houses with open floor plans, have covered outlets set into the middle of the floor for exactly this purpose.

You can run the cords under a large area rug to the nearest wall. This will help conceal the long cords. Floor outlets are ideal, but not always possible.

I hate to mention it, but isn't running a cord under an area rug a fire hazard? That is what I was always taught (along with not leaving your laptop sitting unattended on beds or sofas, which of course I do all the time!).

Recently rewired a few lamps using the cloth covered (rayon) wire in color. Playing up the cord and and the retro lamps. cold match the wire color (maybe) to the rug.
