indoor planter boxes

i have a 1980's house with indoor planter boxes that seperate living room with fireplace from the family room with tv that currently has ugly fake plants in it. I am selling the house and want to stage for aesthetics. What can I put in the planter boxes besides plants that would help me to acheive the look i want. Tahoe contemporary is the look I am wanting.

I'm not sure the size, but could you use river stone and a variety of pillar candles?

Or maybe a bunch of succulent plants?
