When you contact a company such as California Closets, they send a designer over to take measurements and consult w/ you about your needs and preferences and they send drawings and a quote back a couple days later.

They provide you with a wide choice of finishes, storage options (open shelves, drawers, doors, etc) hardware, fittings, etc. - and do the installation for you.

The other option you have would be to send a closet specialist your floorplan & measurements and have them design you a system - then have them ship the pieces to you and have your local handyman make the installation for you...
...However in that case, you would be entirely reponsible for any errors or omissions in the plans resulting in mis-sized or ill-fitting pieces - so it may be just as well to have a local cabinetmaker/craftsman create a completely custom system for you.

These closet cabinets and fittings were manufactured by a custom cabinet manufacturer, based on a plan that I prepared. The nice thing about having plans (they're really not expensive) is the ability to shop for the manufacturer/supplier that can provide what you want for a competitive price. My clients have had difficulties with closet-specialty companies wanting to provide "cookie-cutter" options or upsell to a level that was unaffordable. Best to have options!
