I need help for a gloomy hallway.

I need to update my dads house because I"ll be moving into in in a few months. He was a big fan of dark wood and burgundy ( as you can see from the horrific burgundy kitchen cabinets). I am not sure what to do with the hallway. The floor is a dark parquett and wanscoting is made of 1 inch wide pieces of wood. The walls will be painted a medium tan ( Behr Basketry ). Should I paint the wainscoting white to soften things up or leave it as it is?

This will be different for you, moving in to his house and making it YOUR home! I LOVE the wall color you have chosen. Maybe paint the top white part of the wall and then see how you like the bottom wooden part as is. It might look totally different for you with a different COLOR on the top. Do you have lots of WOODEN furniture for the space that will compete with that wood, or will it all coordinate? A few rugs on the floor will add some color, too.

Yes, I would paint the wainscoting white. It will look a whole lot fresher and brighter. I like the parquet floor!
