Hey Marlo, I just answered your other question in the ideabook, then took another look at the picture of it in that ideabook, and it certainly seems like it is a much bigger span than they say in the description (21"). I'm sorry I won't have access to the lamp until summer to see for myself! It's definitely a bit of a space hog - it doesn't really work in a small room unless there is a big empty corner.

I contacted the store and they said the base is adjustable. The narrowest it can go and still remain stable is between 18-19 inches so that works for me although I think it looks more elegant in a wider width.
